Rotavirus Vaccine

(1)Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrheal disease of infants and young children in both developed and developing countries leading to ~600,000 deaths per year worldwide (2,3). In the US, rotavirus results in 500,000 physician visits and 55,000 hospitalizations per year resulting in annual costs of greater than $1B (4). The optimal way to prevent this disease and substantially reduce the associated financial costs is to vaccinate infants soon after birth.

The development program for rotavirus vaccine will be accelerated based on the significant phase 1 and 2 clinical data previously generated by NIH. The safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of this vaccine and absence of interference with other childhood vaccines (DTP, Hib, HBV and OPV) were established during clinical trials in adults, children and infants (5,6).

Aridis has signed an exclusive license for the multivalent human-bovine rotavirus vaccine for US, Europe, Canada, and non-exclusive rights to Australia, Korea and Japan from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Aridis will develop the rotavirus vaccine with its own stabilization technology and a simple to administer oral delivery system that assures full dose receipt of the vaccine.
