To treat chronic lung infections, our therapeutic anti-infective products will be delivered directly to the lung by inhalation. This topical delivery strategy enables localization of high drug concentration to the infected area and minimizes toxicity associated with high systemic dose. Aridis' inhalation technology involve a spray drying process that can generate stable powders with the necessary aerosol properties for effective lung delivery.
Spray drying is a cost-effective, scalable drying method that can directly produce stable pharmaceutical powders with properties that are amendable to lung delivery or further fabrication into other dosage presentations. This processing method is widely used in the food industry and is increasingly finding’s its way into the biopharmaceutical industry. Conventional spray drying involves significant heat input and shear stress that prohibit a broader application with protein therapeutics and vaccines that are less stable than insulin. Aridis has developed a proprietary 'Sonic' Atomization Technology that produces droplets at lower shear and significantly smaller size distribution, effectively increases the surface area-to-volume ratio which facilitates droplet evaporation during spray drying. This lowers the processing stress and enables manufacture of stable inhalable therapeutics and vaccines. Furthermore, our formulated and spray dried powder are resistant to inactivation under harsh conditions such as high temperature and organic solvent conditions.
