Using advanced formulation and delivery technologies, biopharmaceuticals can be made more convenient and less costly for healthcare providers. Typically, handling and administration of biopharmaceuticals require skilled workers (pharmacist, physician and nurse) at significant cost, which can account for a significant portion of total administration costs for vaccines. By reducing the labor required, Aridis offers a strong purchasing incentive to healthcare providers at a time of rising concern over healthcare costs. Worldwide, large organizational purchasers (WHO, UNICEF, government agencies) and a less reliable cold chain make the need for fail-safe and less expensive biopharmaceuticals even more acute.

Recent analyses indicate that the market growth of monoclonal antibodies is expected to continue with an estimated tripling in value over the next six years from $10.3 billion in 2004 to $30.3 billion in 2010. New products will drive much of this growth with arthritis, immune and inflammatory disorders among the leading indications. This is an evolving market with more efficient manufacturing and delivery alternatives driving some of this growth. Aridis is poised to address delivery via the pulmonary route with its monoclonal antibody for treatment of cystic fibrosis and hospital acquired pneumonia.

The lack of generic monoclonal antibodies in the foreseeable future will provide a longer and more robust lifecycle than more traditional pharmaceuticals.

Vaccines are an expanding segment of the pharmaceutical market. In the last decade the vaccine market has grown from annual global sales of $1 billion to current estimates that range from $4 billion to almost $6 billion driven largely by the introduction of new vaccines. According to recent estimates an expected double-digit annual revenue growth in the vaccine market segment over the next decade could result in a $10 billion vaccine industry by 2010.

This growth will be dependent on introduction of new vaccines to protect against infectious diseases currently without treatment options, stimulated in part by new technological innovations to develop vaccine candidates with improved delivery options such as non-injectable routes of delivery (oral, nasal, transcutaneous, edible). Both of Aridis’ vaccines are oral, room temperature stable and in a convenient wafer format that will be both convenient and cost effective to administer.
